Speaker Bio: Richard Lucic

Richard Lucic, Associate Professor of the Practice of Computer Science
Duke University

As Director of External Relations, Richard Lucic manages and facilitates relationships with industrial partners, academic institutions, government agencies and private foundations. These symbiotic partnerships connect graduating students with leading companies, acquire research funding, and match faculty expertise with industry interest for collaborative research. These relationships foster communication between researchers and industry, and ensure that the department's research and curriculum are relevant and timely. Members of the Industrial Partners Program include tech heavyweights Bell Labs, Cisco Systems, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Intel and Microsoft.

Lucic, whose research of technology transfer is used to move technology effectively from the lab to the users, also manages intellectual property (IP) for the department. To speed the time consuming effort of IP management, Lucic works with faculty to package their research for patent submission, as well as for licensing opportunities with industry partners. These external interactions are critical in generating the necessary funds for Duke's computer science department to compete with other top-tier universities as a department with innovative research and top-notch graduates. He also serves as Faculty Curriculum Director of the Information Sciences and Information Studies Interdisciplinary program at Duke.

In addition, Lucic teaches classes that meld technology with business: Principles of Research Management, Principles of Effective E-Commerce, and Web-based Multimedia Communications.
