Speaker Bio: David Jackson
David Jackson, School of Podcasting
Dave Jackson has been helping people understand technology for over 25 years. Dave laughs as he remembers, "I used to teach people how to surf the Internet. That seems so strange today." I've worked in customer service, as a technician, or marketing departments. However, I knew I found my calling when I got into teaching.
Along the way Dave has developed a training style that is best described as "edu-tainment." "When people are having fun they're relaxed. When they are relaxed they become better students. The key to being a good instructor is to be a good student. When I'm learning something for the first time, I take an insane amount of notes. I know that if I have a question about a topic, so will my future students.".
When Dave got involved in podcasting (early 2005), there was barely any podcasting information available. Consequently, it was a struggle to understand. Dave took his passion for helping people understand technology, along with his passion for the Internet and created the School of Podcasting (a membership site with hundreds of resources and hours of audio and video tutorials to help you plan, produce, and promote your podcast) in 2005. "I didn't want people to have to go through what I did to understand podcasting."
"I remember the thrill I got when I first understood the power of podcasting, and now I get to relive that again and again through my students. Working with my students I get to see what pitfalls they may encounter. I then help them get over any hurdles and use that knowledge to create tutorials for other students."
In addition to running the School of Podcasting, Dave produces three podcasts: "The Musicians Cooler - where musicians trade advice (for independent musicians)," "The School of Podcasting's Morning Announcements (podcasting tips)" and "Sloppy Seconds" (a sarcastic look at the music business). His other podcasting related sites include www.podcastclicks.com (a cross promotion site for podcasters), and www.podcastcharts.com (a podcasting directory), and www.podcastingshirts.com (a site featuring podcasting related clothing items), and www.podcastertoolbar.com (a toolbar with podcasting resources).
"As an instructor my biggest thrill is watching someone enter a classroom scared, confused, and intimidated, only to watch them leave with a new confidence and courage to harness the power of technology."
