Speaker Bio: Larry LaCost

Larry LaCost, The Daily Journal

Larry LaCost is a podcaster with the Daily Journal in Kankakee, Illinois. Back in August of 2005, the newspaper was one of the first to introduce its readers to this new medium and currently broadcasts three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) to more than 500 listeners per show. Online, the Daily Journal is located at www.daily-journal.com. You can access the podcast from the homepage by clicking on the blue microphone.

The Daily Journal Podcast showcases the positive aspects of Kankakee County. (Situated 50 miles south of Chicago, Kankakee County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Illinois.) Its content compliments the newspaper. On Monday the show features a community calendar and an interview with a person who is having a positive effect in the community. Wednesday's show includes local arts, entertainment and sports and on Friday local bands provide podsafe music. Larry designs, produces and posts these shows himself and his focus is always on providing high quality content.

Not only a benefit to listeners, The Daily Journal's Podcast is also bringing in revenue through local advertising. Taking a cue from the Podcast Brothers Podcast, local advertisers are seeing the value of this new opportunity to reach the public.

Larry LaCost started his sales career with traditional media in the late 1980s working in the cable television industry in Long Beach, California. In 1992, he landed a position in the legal division of McGraw-Hill publishers. (The legal division is now at http://www.lexisnexis.com/shepards/.) During the late '90s, he contracted a position at the Bureau of National Affairs. In 2003, he moved to Illinois to become an advertising consultant to local businesses with The Daily Journal.

Over the years, Larry has made a specialty of helping businesses take full advantage of technology. A recent trip to The New Media Expo in Ontario, California reaffirmed his commitment to podcasting and The Daily Journal's decision to include the new medium, even though it was one of only a handful of newspapers present at the event.

Larry LaCost currently serves as Vice President of the Bradley-Bourbonnais Rotary Club and will assume the role of president in June 2006. He is a member of Grace Baptist Church in Kankakee. He and his wife Krista have three children.
