Speaker Bio: Dave Van Dyke
Dave Van Dyke, Bridge Ratings
Dave Van Dyke is the former Vice President and Station General Manager of CBS/Infinity-owned and operated KCBS-FM in Los Angeles who now over-sees two successful radio management advisement businesses whose goals are to prepare the radio industry by mapping the future of the medium. Dave is widely-recognized for his research, programming and operations successes rebuilding radio stations and taking failing radio properties and turning them into high cash-flowing corporate contributors. Expertise in sales, marketing, promotion and branding also contribute to his successful track record. His combined programming, sales and station management skills make him unique in the radio business providing broadcast organizations broad managerial expertise at the highest level.
His career began as an on-air personality for Bartell's WMYQ-FM, Miami with additional stints on air in Detroit and in Chicago for ABC's WDAI-FM. His programming experience includes stations in Dallas, Denver, Portland and Boston where he was also utilized as the CBS corporate in-house programming consultant for Group Stations. His Boston operations success at WODS-FM led CBS to promote him to Vice President and General Manager in 1989. Subsequently, he was recruited by CBS corporate to fix ailing properties and was transferred to CBS' FM oldies station, KODJ/Los Angeles in 1991.
Van Dyke co-created, developed and engineered the "All Rock & Roll Oldies" radio format, originated on KCBS-FM in 1993 and heard on radio stations around the U.S. and the world. This highly successful brand known at "The ARROW Format," has proven ratings and revenue results, typically launching former struggling radio properties into top five most-listened-to status.
In other career highlights, Van Dyke:
Initiated website database marketing programs to further brand and develop richer listener relationships with the radio station and clients.
Established radio's first sales department devoted exclusively to non-traditional sales (NTR).
Helped invent the first data casting on the Internet via the now pervasive "Now Playing" applet, which identifies music currently playing. This applet is now a standard application for most streaming Internet websites.
Initiated revenue-generation business for station websites, which included on-air/web cross promotions, website construction for clients, and an information distribution system for advertisers.
Director/Infinity Broadcasting Corporate Internet Task Force, contributing to the corporate approach to Internet activity.
Mr. Van Dyke founded his company, Radio Mentor, in August 2001. A broadcast management consulting company, Radio Mentor provides radio station general management a confidential, competent strategic resource during these rapidly changing times.
In 2003 Mr. Van Dyke founded and launched a radio-centric research company called Bridge Ratings - a new audience measurement and behavioral analysis product targeted to radio operators in all sized markets who demand more accurate and frequent audience measurement. In 2005 the company introduced extensive audience behavioral analyses and advisement to help the industry be better prepared to face the impact of new media on listening behavior. The company also includes among its clients private equity firms seeking truthful guidance for the media sector.
